Mission Improbable: God’s Unmistakable Call

October is Missions Month at GCR. To help us concentrate on our role in God’s eternal plans to redeem the world, we’re going to dive into the story of Jonah, and we’re going to see that God is the star of the story. Not Jonah. Not the big fish. Not the sailors or the storm, not the Ninevites or the vine, the worm or the cows in sackcloth. God is the main character. Our God is the One overcoming the hurdles we erect in order to bring salvation to his creation. Our God is the One who acts in improbable ways in improbable circumstances to redeem the world.

There will be a few bad whale jokes and some groan-inducing puns as we work together toward Missions Sunday. But together we’ll re-discover the truth of our Lord’s concern for his whole creation. We’ll see that our Father does his greatest work when the odds are stacked against him. And we’ll encourage and empower one another to jump into that work with everything we have.

Please read Jonah 1:1-17 this week and then join us at 10:15 this Sunday morning October 4 as we kick off Missions Month. We’ll announce the giving goal for Missions Sunday, we’ll hear from Jason Kumalo and our partners with Namwianga Mission in Zambia, and we’ll enjoy a CrocktoberFest potluck lunch together in the GCR Gathering Space.
