The Sleepy Friend
“Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.” ~Luke 11:9
There’s only one time in the Gospels that Jesus’ disciples ask him to teach them something. At the outset of the final journey to Jerusalem, they ask the Lord to teach them how to pray. They’ve been living and working with Jesus for at least three years now, watching what he does and how he does it, and they’ve come to the realization that his prayer life is a critical component of Jesus’ relationship and work with his Father.
“Lord, teach us to pray.”
Jesus responds by giving his followers a model prayer, a short story about prayer, and then an illustration that connects the prayer to the story. He teaches his disciples, including us, that living in and working for the Kingdom of God is done from a place of deep humility and dependence on the Father.
“Give us each day our daily bread.”
“Lend me three loaves of bread.”
“If your son asks for bread…”
Please read Luke 11:1-13 this week. Then join us at 10:15 this Sunday morning April 19 as we consider together our dependence on God and his Holy Spirit for everything we need for an abundant life in him.
