The Stinky Solution
“Let it alone this year also, till I shall dig about it and dung it.” ~Luke 13:8, KJV
It’s a weird line in a short little parable. The particular word is used only here in the entire New Testament. Some Bible translations use “manure,” while most versions say “fertilizer.” But the old King James and American Standard Versions translate the Greek word literally: “dung.”
The landowner’s first reaction to the barren tree is to order it to be chopped down. But the farmers ultimately decide to give the tree some more time and spread around a little manure.
Please read Luke 13:6-9 a couple of times this week. Then join us at 10:15 this Sunday morning May 3 as we consider together the tension between God’s grace and his judgment, his patience and his punishment.
