Marriage Matters: Submission and Marriage

Submission has become a dirty word. We hear the word “submission” and we think about slavery, oppression, or forced labor of some kind. The only people to whom we must submit are power-hungry dictators or cruel taskmasters. The word “submit” is outdated and out of the question. To submit is seen as the opposite of to be free, and freedom seems to be our most prized value.

But submission is mandatory in a marriage. If the essence of marriage is the vow, then submission is the function.

And, yes, it’s much easier said than done. Submission is difficult in any context, but especially hard for us to practice with our spouses.

Please read Ephesians 5:21-33. Then join us at 10:15 this Sunday morning September 13 as we consider together the biblical instructions and practical implications of submission and marriage.
